Rugs are an essential piece to any home. A rug provides the foundation for a room, but placing it can be tricky, as it can easily make or break a room. I recently spent some time with an interior designer who pointed out that my dining room rug was the wrong size. A new rug later and the space instantly feels bigger and more luxurious. While not everyone has an interior designer on their team, here are the basics I have learned on how to transform your room by adding a rug.
In The Living Room
- The rug should have at least 6in on each side of furniture
- Make sure the front legs of furniture are on the rug
- Typical sizes are large: 8×10, 9×12, 10×14
Design Tip: Don’t leave a rug floating in the middle of the room. If the rug isn’t grounded by the front legs of furniture or substantial enough, it will completely throw off the flow of the room.
In The Dining Room
- Make sure the rug extends beyond the table by at least 8in on each side
- All dining room chairs should be on the rug
- Leave at least 1 foot of space around the exterior perimeter of the room
Design Tip: A full rug with plenty of room to slide dining room chairs back and stay on the rug completes the room. This was the biggest change I made to my personal dining room and that small edit made a huge difference!
In The Bedroom
- Typical rug size for a king bed is 9×12 and queen bed is 8×10
- Leave at least 8in from the nightstand to the edge of the rug
- Make sure the rug extends beyond the bed by at least 1 foot
Design Tip: Don’t want to splurge on a large rug? You can achieve the same look by placing custom runners beside the bed.
